A joint inspection initiated by the NSPCA with the Environmental Management Inspectors from DESTEA was carried out on the 3rd of August 2021 on a lion breeding farm in the Free State Province. The inspection carried out matched that of an old familiar scene NSPCA Inspectors are familiar with regarding lion farming.

A magnificent male lion known as Mopane has been killed in a hunting area on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. Reliable sources say he was targeted by a bow hunter in the same area in which renowned lion Cecil was killed in 2015. Guides at the park said Mopane was as big and impressive as Cecil.

The African lion is facing multiple threats, hence the need to strengthen its protection, a campaigner said on Tuesday during the World Lion Day. Edith Kabesiime, Wildlife Campaigns Manager at World Animal Protection's Africa Office said that human and climate induced threats to the iconic carnivore have escalated in the recent past.

Namibia's lion population continues to grow steadily, with 2020 statistics indicating that the wildcats' population stands at approximately 800 countrywide. This includes 96 to124 lions in Kunene; 305 to 366 in Etosha; 39 in Kavango; 52 in Zambezi and over 100 on private land.
