The Portfolio Committee on Environment, Forestry and Fisheries welcomes the announcement made yesterday by the Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, that South Africa plans to ban the breeding of lions in captivity for trophy hunting or for tourist to pet.

There is an expression in English that says “you could have knocked me over with a feather”. On Sunday May 2nd 2021 Ms Barbara Creecy, South Africa’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment made a surprise announcement that knocked interested parties over with a feather! In simplistic terms she announced the government would immediately begin a process which would lead to the end of captive lion breeding and canned hunting, she said “the panel recommends that South Africa does not captive breed lions, keep lions in captivity, or use captive lions or their derivatives commercially. I have requested the department to action this accordingly and ensure that the necessary consultation in implementation is conducted."

As announced earlier this week, on Sunday Barbara Creecy, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment of South Africa, released the High Level Panel (HLP) report on the management, breeding, hunting, trade and handling of elephant, lion, leopard and rhinoceros. The long-awaited report was supposed to give recommendations on captive lion breeding.

Vietnam has been a major destination and transit point for the global wildlife trafficking trade. Between 2003 and 2019, the country has been involved in the deaths of at least 15,779 elephants, 610 rhinoceroses, 228 tigers and 65,510 pangolins, according to the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).
